Lovino and Antonio were back in their routine so quickly, it was as if they had never broken up. If anything, the sex was a bit more frequent than usual but no one complained, that's for sure. This however brought up an issue Lovino had forgotten. They used condoms because Antonio believed that Lovino didn't want children when in reality he just didn't want Antonio to have false hope. If they went unprotected and didn't produce a child for a long time, Antonio might get suspicious and Lovino couldn't have that.
In the end, Lovino pushed that concern aside for now and kept their encounters 'safe'. Beyond their physical relationship, the couple were enjoying their company. Antonio liked to talk about work and how nice his bosses were and how well Matthew was doing with his new job and so on. Lovino when prompted talked about his business. He'd been on a bit of break from scouting potential partners and was simply riding through the holiday rush now. Antonio was always impressed at how well he was doing and tried to help Lovino relax after any long days by making dinner or setting up a bath for him. The care was well received and even if Lovino was a little worried about going into this relationship again, he was becoming more and more comfortable with it.

A few days before the end of October, Lovino decided to go out with Arthur again. The idea wasn't completely out of the blue as they had talked a little during Thanksgiving and Lovino found their conversations informational. Lovino had recently found out that Francis's condo was a source of drama and he found this somewhat amusing but he didn't like hearing it from Antonio because he still liked to go on and on about Mateo this and Mateo that. Even though he'd dismissed any chemistry between them, he still didn't like it. He preferred an alternate more neutral speaker and this is how he and Arthur ended up at the café on Arthur's street for lunch.
"You're late," Lovino said checking his watch as Arthur came in. He also couldn't help but notice that Arthur was wearing the same gloves he'd given to him two years back. They were surprisingly well kept; Lovino himself usually managed to rip them after one winter or lose one or get them overly dirty by dropping them somewhere.
"Oh, shut up. My rabbit got out and I had to chase him up and down the hall of my apartment building." Arthur scowled and sat down. "What do you want?"
"Nothing. How are you?" Lovino asked.
"Fine. But this better not be one of your interrogations again. Tell me now so I can leave. I'll not have it."
Lovino shook his head. "It's nothing like that." It was kind of like that but Lovino had settled on a less aggressive approach. "Are you hungry?"
"No, I don't have any cash on me," Arthur said.
"That's not what I asked."
"...I don't want you to buy me food."
"Fine."
"So, you and Antonio are back together, yes?" Arthur asked. "How's that going?"
Lovino shrugged. "It's alright." He had ordered a cup of coffee before Arthur arrived and a waitress had just come over to deliver it to him. He thanked her and took a sip. "Have you gotten together with Francis yet?"
"What?" Arthur looked taken aback. "No! Of course not!"
"Why not?"
"Because I don't like him, that's why not!"
Lovino shrugged again. "Okay. Is there anyone else then?"
Arthur took a bit too long to answer in Lovino's mind. "Well, no... Not in that way at least..."
Lovino tilted his head. "In what way then?"
Arthur paused again then leaned slightly forward, dropping his voice a little. "Okay, this is going to sound crazy but Thanksgiving, remember?"
Lovino nodded. He'd pushed the right button and here came the drama.
"So you'd gone to bed early I think but after that we talked about where Alfred, you know Mattie's brother, where he'd stay the night and we decided for him to stay with me."
"And you fucked him?" Lovino asked.
"No! No, nothing like that at all. No." Arthur cleared his throat. "Well first off, Elizabeta did something for me when Mattie went in to the hospital and--"
"He went to the hospital?" Lovino raised a brow. "For what?"
"Oh I don't know, apparently he's been sick or something but anyway... Elizabeta did an extra test I was curious about and--"
"Sounds illegal."
"Anyway she does the test and it turns out my hunch was right. Francis is their father."
Lovino had been a bit distracted by his coffee but then he looked up to see Arthur was looking at him, expecting a reaction. "...Whose father?"
"Matthew and Alfred!"
Lovino raised an eyebrow. "That's not possible. Toni said that Matthew was born here. Francis was in France then."
"I know but apparently their mother moved here from France while she was pregnant with them."
"But Francis would've been fif... No I believe it now. But what does that have to do with you?"
"Well, Alfred didn't take it very well then and when I took him to my place, he blamed me for ruining Thanksgiving by telling them about Francis."
Lovino nodded. "Well you did."
"No I didn't! Francis forced it out of me!"
Lovino shook his head. "I doubt that."
"Well anyway, Alfred was upset but then he..." Alfred pursed his lips. "No, you don't need to know that..."
"Too late, you already led into it."
Arthur frowned. "Well... He kissed me."
"Gross. He's like five compared to you."
Arthur rolled his eyes. "Anyway, I kicked him out. But then the next day he wanted to apologize. I let him of course but that's how I find out that we're practically brothers."
"What? You've lost me."
"His adoptive parents sponsored me when I was young. Kind of like a big brother program. They helped me with school and gave me a place to stay when I didn't feel comfortable at home." Arthur sighed. "But when Alfred was six, they found out I was gay and kicked me out."
Lovino chuckled a little.
This surprised Arthur. "What's so funny?"
Lovino smiled. "Well, I mean you figured out that Francis and Matthew were related but you couldn't even recognise Alfred."
"Oh shut up, that's completely different," Arthur said.
"All this sounds like a lame ass soap opera. Small fucking world."
"Well it's all true."
Lovino took another sip of his coffee. "Weird. But anyway... You said Matthew's sick. He didn't look sick at Thanksgiving."
"I know, right? I don't get it but he comes to the hospital often enough that I'm a little concerned... The records I can access just say some kind of stomach virus but I feel like he'd seem more ill. And he sees Roderich too, you know."
It didn't take long for it to click in Lovino's head about what was going on and he laughed again which was really starting to piss off the Brit.
"What's so funny now?" He snapped.
"You're an idiot, that's what's funny," Lovino said. "You really don't know what's wrong with Matthew?"
"No, of course not! Why? Do you know?"
Lovino nodded. "I'm pretty sure I do."
"Well then what is it?"
"I'm not going to tell you."
Arthur growled. "Seriously?"
"Sì. It's not my business to tell if I'm right."
"Fuck you." Arthur groaned and crossed his arms. "Why doesn't anyone ever tell me anything?"
Lovino shrugged. Then he noticed the time and started getting up. "I have to get back to work."
"Yeah, whatever. Bye."
"Ciao."
Lovino left some cash for his coffee on the table before waving and leaving.

When he got home that night, Antonio had made himself at home and was making dinner. Spain mewled to Lovino as he was taking off his shoes so he picked him up and carried him to the kitchen.
"What's for dinner?" Lovino asked as he pet the cat.
"Croquetas," Antonio sung happily. "Lovi's second favourite."
"Lies." Lovino leaned against Antonio's back. "So did you go to work today?"
"No I'm going in tonight," Antonio said.
"Is that why you're here?"
"Yeah I didn't want to wait for you to pick me up so I came over. Is that okay?"
Lovino nodded. "I guess so."
The Spaniard looked at him over his shoulder. "You sound tired."
"A little." He hugged Antonio's back. "Are you working during the day tomorrow?"
"Sí," Antonio said, nodding slightly. "Why?"
"Because I'm gonna come over, obviously."
"Okay. You do that anyway."
"Sì, but tomorrow, I want tofu. Can you make that?"
Antonio paused then swung Lovino around in front of him by the arms. Lovino was so taken off guard, he nearly fell over, the counter catching him. He stared wide eyed into Antonio's very concentrated ones. Finally the Spaniard spoke. "Are you pregnant again?"
Lovino knit his eyebrows and blinked. "No, idiota. Why would you think that? Let go..."
Antonio's grip loosened but he didn't let go. "You don't like tofu. The last time you asked for tofu, you were pregnant."
Lovino didn't remember that and rolled his eyes. "No, La Riviera wants to add a new vegetarian dish but asked me for advice. So I want to try tofu again just to see if there's anything good about it."
Antonio stared at Lovino another moment but let go of his arms and turned back to his prep. "Oh. Sure, I guess I can see what I can do..."
Lovino frowned and pushed away from the counter. "Toni... What's wrong?"
Antonio shook his head. "I don't know what you mean. I'm fine."
"...You were really hoping, weren't you?"
"..."
"We've been using protection."
"It'd still be possible... A flaw, a rip..."
"Toni, look at me," Lovino said.
Antonio hesitated but turned to look at him. It was clear that he was about to cry.
Lovino looked into his eyes. "Is this about the baby we lost?"
Antonio looked down and shook his head. "No..."
"Look at me. Lying's not going to make you feel better." Lovino rubbed his arm gently. "Just talk to me."
Antonio let out a shaky sigh. "But you never wanted to talk about it... You broke up with me the last time I wanted to talk about it."
Lovino looked up into his face. This wasn't a lie. He looked away. "I'm sorry... Back then I was in a really bad place and...I just couldn't handle it."
"But I wanted to help you," Antonio said. He brought a hand up to Lovino's face and gently pushed hair away from his eyes. "I knew I needed the comfort. I thought it might be mutual."
Lovino sighed, leaning into Antonio's hand. "It was... I just... I made the wrong choice. I wasn't thinking about you and how you felt... I was being selfish."
Antonio pressed his head against Lovino's. "Can I tell you what I wanted?"
Lovino nodded.
"I just wanted to cry with you."
Lovino looked up at him again. Then his eyes dropped, glanced to the backdoor off the kitchen and then came back to Antonio. "...Can I show you something?"
Antonio took his turn to nod. "Anything."
"You might want a coat."
Antonio took the suggestion and brought over his coat and Lovino's. After they were on snuggly, Lovino led him out the back yard. In a little grove of orange trees just beyond the pool, Lovino uncovered a stone slab sunk into the soil. Inscribed on it was a name and a phrase:

FIORE
Sarai sempre amato.

Antonio stared at it then read out the Italian. "'You will always be loved'..." He turned to his boyfriend. "Lovino..."
"Feli helped me import the stone from Roma. I... I gave it as unisex a name I could think of in Italiano since we didn't know the gender." Lovino was avoiding eye contact. "I hope that's okay..."
Antonio shook his head gently. "It's the perfect name, Lovino. I love it."
Lovino could feel his face warm up as the tears threatened to fall. He sniffled lightly but this only opened the floodgates and soon he was in pieces.
Antonio started to sob too and pulled him into a hug. Lovino buried his face in Antonio's shoulder and his hands gripped desperately to the back of his coat. He could feel the Spaniard's body tremble in his and he only held him tighter. He could feel every emotion Antonio felt within him now but a small pang in his heart reminded him of the truth still hidden from him. For now though, he suppressed it.
Right now they needed each other.
Now they could cry together.
