Lovino soon found out that this pregnancy thing was harder than it looked. The fatigue, the hunger, morning sickness, the lack of wine... All of it was taking a toll on the poor Italian man and work didn't make it any better. He had trouble being punctual now that he slept in more often. The sickness made it worse because he had no tome to work when he was hugging a toilet. On really bad days, he took the day off but he didn't want to because he had a lot of work to do. One of his partners had opened a café downtown for instance and he had thought of trying to get Antonio a job there but he didn't have time to meet with his partner and even missed the opening ceremonies due to 'the flu'. He hadn't told anyone the true nature of his ailment, not even his assistant, and that only made it worse since people were giving him get well cards and gifts and he didn't like lying to them.
His least favourite part though was probably the weight gain. He hadn't started showing yet but he'd definitely gained weight and knowing it made him feel fat. Thinking about the future too, he didn't know how he'd hide the baby bump from his co-workers. Feliciano had gone on a medical leave once he couldn't explain his swollen stomach at work but he was a high school art teacher, not the owner of nearly fifty authentic restaurants throughout the GTA. Lovino didn't have the time to take months off, he was struggling just taking off a few days here and there when his sickness was at it's worst. He didn't believe the company could run well without him.
His only other big concern was for the baby itself. He didn't know if he was taking care of himself properly. He tried to eat healthy but he was almost always throwing things back up. On occasion, he forgot he couldn't have wine or too much coffee and he regretted it once he'd down a whole mug. He had no energy at all without his morning coffee so he didn't take it out of his diet but then he felt guilty about it every time. He also didn't have time to exercise even though the doctor highly recommended it. His blood pressure was low without it only continuing to contribute to his tiredness and making him fear for the baby. Genealogy aside, Lovino was constantly worried about the baby. After another month into the pregnancy he already felt like he'd completely ruined the child's life.
Antonio was worried as well but he was sure there wasn't anything wrong. Regardless, he couldn't take seeing his boyfriend so upset. One day he didn't let him go to work like that.
"Lovi, I'm not letting you go," he said, literally wrapped around Lovino's waist as he was trying to go out the door.
"Bastard! Let me go!" Lovino said dragging him. "I don't feel sick today!"
"But still! You're going to go to work then you're going to get worried about the baby and you're probably gonna get mad at Valentino and the poor guy's not gonna know what to do and he'll probably lose his self-esteem!"
"Shut up! Valentino doesn't have self-esteem to lose!" Lovino growled. "Let me go!"
"No! Let me try to make you feel better!"
"Bastardo!"
"Fuso so so so so so so!"
"Ah!" Lovino panted but calmed down a little. "Fine! I won't fucking go. When I don't have money and we have to give up the baby for adoption, don't complain!"
Antonio beamed happily and hugged him. "Okay, let's go!"
"What? Where?"
"The hospital."
"Fuck that! That place smells like death and old people."
"Lovi, it'll make you feel better. I promise."
"It better."
Antonio took his hand. "It will. I promise."
Lovino finally went with him and they got to the hospital rather quickly considering rush hour. When they did get there, Arthur had just arrived and was setting up the front counter. He sighed when he saw the pair of them.
"What are you two doing here? You don't have an appointment."
"I know..." Lovino said, glaring at Antonio.
"The doctor said we could go in whenever we had questions or issues," Antonio said.
"Which doctor?"
Antonio gave him the name and Arthur raised an eyebrow. "Them? But they're an Obstetrician. That's for... Oh." Arthur's eyes went wide. "...I knew it!"
"What?" Lovino growled.
"You said it was for your brother but you actually wanted children!" Arthur said triumphantly.
Lovino grimaced. "It was for Feliciano. That was months ago and then I didn't want children. I changed my mind."
"Right, Lovino. Sure. Go with that. But I know the truth."
"And I still have those pictures."
Arthur shut up pretty quick. "...Fourth floor."
"We know how to get there, thanks."
Lovino walked off dragging Antonio with him.
"What was that about? What pictures?" the Spaniard asked.
"Don't worry about it. Arthur's crazy."
Antonio shrugged. "Okay. Anyway, let's hurry!"
Lovino groaned. "Too much exertion for poor pregnant me..."
"Oh, you're right! I'll carry you."
"Wait! Wha--"
Before he could finish, Antonio hefted him into his arms bridal style and carried him to the elevator.
Lovino squirmed. "Put me down! Everyone's staring!"
"I don't care what they think."
What about what I think?!"
"What does Lovi think?"
"I think you're crazy!"
"Oh, that's okay. We're all a little."
He got in the elevator and came out on the fourth floor still carrying the terribly embarrassed Italian against his chest. Lovino buried his face in Antonio's neck, blushing furiously. Suddenly his ride stopped at another desk. The young woman behind asked them what they were here for and Antonio told her the doctor's name that they were seeing. She told them to wait a moment for the doctor to come get them. Soon, they did and they were admitted into a small room. Antonio laid Lovino down happily.
"Why are we here?" Lovino asked irritatedly. "I'm not booked for another appointment until Elizabeta gets back."
"I called the doctor and asked if we could hear the heartbeat of the baby," Antonio said.
Lovino blinked. "Isn't it a little early? I'm not even showing."
"You're nine weeks along and we should be able to locate a heartbeat at this point although it's not certain," the doctor said.
Lovino frowned but looked at Antonio. "How's this supposed to make me feel better?"
"I know you've been worried about the baby and I think if you could hear them, you'll know they're okay."
Lovino stiffened his lip. "It's just a heartbeat..."
Antonio sighed. "Just...give it a chance."
Lovino rolled his eyes and lifted his shirt. The doctor took out some gel and applied it to Lovino's stomach just below the navel.
"Shit! That's cold, bastardo!" Lovino snapped.
"Sorry, I should've warned you." The doctor then took out a doppler wand and pressed to where the gel is. Lovino waited quietly, hoping for the sound. After a moment, the doctor hadn't located it yet and Lovino was a little crestfallen.
"Told you it was too early..." he mumbled.
"Just give me a moment," the doctor said. He lowered the wand a little and moved it around.
Suddenly a thumping sound could be lightly heard. The doctor turned up the volume a little and it became clearer. It was a very fast thumping noise.
Lovino began to tear up a little. He was so terribly relieved that he was speechless. He really had been very worried and hearing that strong little heartbeat gave him true hope. It also made him realize this was all definitely real. There was a little life growing inside of him. He was going to be a father.
He was pulled out of his trance by a sudden sniffle beside him. He looked up and saw that Antonio was just a waterfall of tears. Lovino reached out and took his hand. When he saw that Lovino was looking, he quickly wiped his eyes.
"S-So..." Antonio blubbered. "Do y-you feel any b -better?"
Lovino nodded. ". But are you okay?"
"Mmhm..." Antonio sniffled again. "Just fine."
"Bene."
"Lovi, we're gonna be parents!" Antonio said bursting into tear and hugging his boyfriend. Lovino patted his back.
"I feel like you needed this more than I did..."
"I think this was a good experience for both of you," the doctor said, pulling away the wand. The sound stopped and Lovino sighed a little. "Would you like a copy?"
"Of what?" Lovino asked.
"The sound. I can copy it to a USB or CD for you."
"¡Sí!" Antonio said quickly giving him a USB key from his pocket. The doctor took it and went to make the copy.
"You're really prepared..." Lovino said sitting up.
Antonio went to pick him up but Lovino stood before he could.
"I have perfectly functioning legs."
"Okay, okay..."
When the doctor got back to them, they took the recording and headed for home. In the car, Lovino looked out the window.
"Can we play it?" he asked.
"Hm?"
"Play the sound."
"I dunno. Can your car do that?"
"Yeah, just plug in the USB key here."
"Oh!  Wow, that's really cool!"
They got it going and Lovino listened to it silently. It was their baby. Their baby was in him and it was alive. He rubbed his stomach gently, feeling the tightness that had just started to develop. It wouldn't be too long until the bulge of pregnancy started to swell.
"Toni..."
"Hm?"
"Thank you for taking me."
Antonio beamed. "De nada. Did it help?"
"Yeah..."
"I'm glad to hear it."
"Can you please take me to work?"
"No. You can do work from home."
Lovino sighed. "Ti amo."
"Te amo, Lovi."
