Literature Text

The Friday before Christmas, an ice storm hit the eastern seaboard of North America. All travel was dangerous and there were blackouts all across the region. Toronto was hit rather viciously and it was no surprise when the power went out in Francis' condominium that morning. The residents gathered in the living room and opened the blinds wide as they listened to a battery powered radio Francis had found in his room.
"They're saying some people might not get light for three days," Matthew said, frowning. "A lot food will have perished by then..."
"But, I just finished Christmas shopping!" Francis said. "I have a turkey in the freezer and everything... This is terrible."
"What about your brother's hotel?" Gilbert asked Matthew. "Do you know if they have power?"
"And maybe Arthur too," Antonio said. "Francis, text him."
"He won't answer," Francis said. "Mathieu, could you text them both?"
"Yeah, I will..." Matthew went to get his phone.
Antonio shivered. "It's getting so cold..."
"I know, right?" Gilbert said, pulling a blanket over them. "I wish we had a heater..."
"Well, we don't... We should just hope the power comes back soon and in the meantime, find somewhere with power," Francis said.
Matthew came back. "I'm so glad the cell service is up... Alfred already texted. He says they're blacked out too and were hoping we had power."
"Tell him we're looking for someplace," Francis said. "I'll text Elizabeta." He pulled out his phone and started typing.
Matthew's phone began to ring and he picked up. "Hello?" He talked for a minute then paused. "It's Arthur. He has power."
"Awesome!" Gilbert said. "Ask him if we can come over."
Matthew nodded and did so. "He asking if we have any other choices."
"I'm texting Ludwig right now," Gilbert said. "It seems they have power."
"Ah, oui!" Francis said. "They probably have more room."
"Yep, they can take us," Gilbert said right after his phone made the sound of a Pokémon levelling up.
"Merveilleux!," Francis said. "Can you also ask him if he has room for a turkey in his freezer?"
Gilbert asked. "He says 'yes'."
"Parfait. Ask if we can bring Alfred and Ivan."
"He says 'Fine, but leave Francis.'"
Antonio chuckled as he was texting Lovi. "Oh, Lovi's going over too! This'll be fun!"
"Alright, let's get going," Francis said. "Gilbert could you get the ham from the freezer? And we should all pack for a two night stay, just in case."
"Alright." Gilbert got up and went to the kitchen. Antonio went to his bedroom and Francis was going to but Matthew grabbed his wrist.
"Wait," Matthew said. "If the power's out, how will you get the car out of the underground parking? The garage door's electric."
Francis paused. "...Shit."
"I'll see if Ludwig can pick us up," Gilbert said as he brought the turkey to the living room before pulling out his phone again.
"Thank you, Gil," Matthew said before going and packing as well.
Ludwig picked them up forty-five minutes later, after they had descended twenty-some flights of stairs. Usually it wouldn't take much longer than fifteen minutes for him to get there but the ice and snow on the roads were horrendous. Gilbert shotgunned the front for Mattie so he wouldn't have to squeeze into the back with the other two. It took another forty-five minutes for them to get back to Ludwig's house and then he left again to get Alfred and Ivan. The condominium dwellers were so relieved to have light and warmth once again. They had brought Maple and Roma with them so Marina was delighted to see them. Feliciano helped Gilbert arrange the turkey into the freezer while the others got comfortable in the living room. Once they were settled, Francis sat in the middle of the couch and pulled the other visitors into a huddle.
"I know you all probably know not to do so already," he whispered, "But I just want to remind you that it's probably best to avoid all talk of babies around our hosts."
"Of course."
"Ja."
"Si."
"And remember to tell Alfred and Ivan when they get here."
Feliciano cleared his throat and they all straightened up.
"Feli!" Francis said smiling brightly. "You're looking good today."
"I could hear you," the Italian said, unimpressed.
"Ah..." Francis said. "We're sorry. We know it's still a sensitive time."
"It's alright, Francesco," Feliciano said. "Luddy and I have moved on. You really don't need to worry about what you say or do."
"That's kind of you, Feli," Matthew said. "Are you sure?"
"Sì, more than sure," he said. "You're expecting after all and I wouldn't want to be in the way of a part of your life that you should celebrate." He smiled brightly. "I want to be happy for you and Gilbert, not mopey and sad forever."
Matthew smiled and then hugged Feliciano. "Thank you, Feli."
Feliciano chuckled. "Don't mention it."
Suddenly, the front door slammed open and a really cold wind blew snow inside the front hall. The door slammed shut again and a rather frigid young brunet stood frozen in the hall.
Antonio jumped up. "Lovi!" He went over and hugged him tight, which thawed him out enough to say, "Get the fuck off me."
Antonio ignored him and continued to snuggle while Lovino attempt to loosen his joints and remove his outdoor wear. He cursed under his breath as he finally kicked off his boots and trudged into the living room, dragging his boyfriend behind him.
"You!" The elder Italian pointed to Matthew. "I blame you."
Matthew blinked and flinched. "Eh?!"
Lovino wrinkled his nose. "This is your country! Make it stop!"
"Oh. Aha..." Matthew chuckled to himself. "Sorry."
"Don't say 'sorry'!" Gilbert said. "Lovino's just being a dick."
"Vaffanculo, Gilberto!" Lovino said as he crossed the room to the kitchen. "I hate this. I hate this weather! It's up, it's down... Hang me!"
"Aw, Lovi, it's okay," Antonio said holding him tighter. "What matters is that we're all together and safe! As soon as Ludwig gets back."
"I hate him too!"
After he had calmed down, Lovino helped his brother make lunch for all of them as they waited for more news on the outages. After another twenty minutes or so, the front door opened again and finally everyone was together.
Matthew smiled and got up to hug his brother. "Is it still really bad out there?"
"It stopped snowing but the wind's a bitch," Alfred said. "Do I smell lunch?"
"Sì, it's nearly ready," Feliciano said, coming out of the kitchen to give his husband a kiss. "Please, make yourself at home."
"Thanks, Feli, right?" Alfred said.
"Yes, you remembered!" Feliciano said cheerily.
"Awesome!" He took Ivan's hand and led him into the living room. "Ivan, this is everybody. Let me see if I get this right..." He pointed to everyone individually. "You know Francis. Then there's his friends Antonio and Gilbert, Mattie's boyfriend and Ludwig's brother. Feliciano's Ludwig's husband and then there's Antonio, not Mexican."
"Hey, I'm here too!" Lovino said coming out of the kitchen.
"Ah, yeah. Lovino, right?" Alfred said. "Antonio's boyfriend."
"And he's my brother," Feliciano added.
"Marina!" the toddler whined from Antonio's lap.
Feliciano chuckled. "She's our daughter, Marina."
Ivan smiled to everyone. "I will try my best to remember."
"It's hard," Alfred said as he led Ivan to sit on the couch. "Can we eat now?"
"You can eat when we say you can eat!" Lovino huffed before going back to the kitchen.
Alfred pursed his lips and just sat on Ivan's lap since there was no room left on the couch. "He's bossy..."
"Well, he is the owner of several businesses in Corso Italia and Little Italy..." Matthew said. "But, no, he's just moody."
"Businesses? Like what?" Alfred asked sceptically.
"Mostly restaurants... Pizza and gelato."
"Can I take his place?"
"No."
"He must make millions!"
"As if," Lovino said, coming back with a tray of snacks. "Their annual revenue is squat..."
"You make more than any of us, Lovi," Feliciano said, following with more food which he put on the dining table. "That says something."
"You could've to, fratello," Lovino said. "Then you wouldn't have to live in this shit."
"This 'shit'," Ludwig growled. "Has power. What about your home?"
"It has power, too!" Lovino said but then he realized what he said.
Antonio blinked. "...Then why did you say you didn't have power, Lovinito?"
Lovino froze and blushed tomato red. "I... Free food."
Feliciano smiled. "You wanted to be with everyone!"
"Fuck no!" Lovino groaned. "Of course not!"
Antonio got up and hugged Lovino again. "¡Los amanos, Lovi!"
"Just go eat, stronzo!"
Antonio kissed his cheek and then went to sit down. Alfred leapt up to eat to and they all had lunch happily. Afterwards they watched some movies and arranged who was going to sleep where. After dinner, Matthew and Gilbert were given the guest bedroom, though Matthew tried to humbly decline. The rest slept about the living room with blankets and pillows tossed about. Francis tried to get comfortable on a love seat but looking about and seeing Alfred and Ivan completely cuddled up and Antonio and Lovino spooning on the couch, he had trouble sleeping, feeling ultimately lonely with no one to share his warmth. He sighed and laid back, thinking about what went wrong and how had he, a man so enamored with love itself, found himself completely alone surrounded by couples?
He had once had Jeanne but their childish endeavours led them to such a terrible separation. He honestly believed he truly loved her. She had been a beacon of lit to him in the dark times of his very neglected past. When his parents paid no mind to him, he would be with her and she actually sat and listened to him. Sure, he had Antonio and Gilbert as friends but they were young and they couldn't understand his feelings at the time since they were still in the "girls have cooties" stage of their lives. He had known love.
But had he really? Yes, she was there. She was beautiful and they had done things together he had never done with anyone else before, but had he known her? Loved her for who she was? He couldn't even remember her favourite colour. Or flower. Or animal.
He did know Arthur's favourite colour. It was a deep green. His favourite flowers were roses and his favourite animal was a lion. He also liked rabbits and bulldogs. He liked to listen to punk rock and the Beatles and his favourite food was fish and chips. His favourite place to go was the ocean, despite him being flotationally challenged.
Francis knew a lot of things about Arthur.
He sighed.
And now he almost felt he knew too much...
A tear rolled down the Frenchman's cheek as he finally drifted off.

NEW COVER PICTURE. It's not very different so you might not have noticed but I made it more appealing to at least myself. I was just sick of the flaws I kept seeing.

Also, since I drew the dead!Marco gif, I decided you guys didn't need an overly morbid chapter so here you go.
