Literature Text

Francis was at lunch with Arthur again the next day. The two had been chatting over the politics in Quebec although Arthur acted apathetic towards the goings on. He was just admitting that the Laurentians were a nice place for holiday when Elizabeta found them. She was pale and a bit shaken when she got there.
"Francis!" she said leaning on the cafeteria table. "We have an emergency!"
"Emergency?" Arthur mumbled. "That's ER work, not yours."
"It's about Matthew!"
"Mathieu?" Francis stood quickly. "What? What is it?"
"Well, um... I did the usual test but a certain very unlikely test came back with shocking results..." She bit her lip. "Just come see!"
"D'accord, d'accord..." Francis turned for a second. "Pardonnez-moi, Arthur, but as you can see, I must go."
Arthur scoffed. "What do I care? Get lost..."
Francis frowned and followed Elizabeta down the hall. Arthur watched them go and then speared his salad angrily.

"How about a horror?"
Gilbert, Antonio, and Matthew had actually decided to see a movie that Tuesday afternoon so they were at the theatre trying to figure out what to watch. When Antonio pointed to a zombie movie poster, Matthew shook his head.
"It's so over done," he said. "Don't get me wrong, zombies are absolutely awesome but the movies are predictable. And if you really want to see some zombies, the Zombie Walk's soon."
"Zombie Walk?"
"Yeah, every October at Trinity Bellwoods Park."
"Mein Gott, we should definitely dress up for that!" Gilbert said. "Why haven't I heard about this before?!"
Matthew smiled. "It is fun. But we have to pick a movie."
"Right, right... 'Kay, maybe an action movie."
"Well, I have been looking forward to seeing this movie..." Matthew said pointing to another poster.
"Looks hard-core!" Antonio said excitedly.
"Sounds like a plan," Gilbert said. "Agreed?"
"Yup!"
"¡Si!"
"Let's go then."
They lined up to buy tickets and then got a bunch of popcorn and went to find some good spots. It didn't take them long to find a seat since Gilbert just charged to the back of the theatre and found himself what he believed to be the most middle seat in regards to the screen. Then he gave it to Matthew and the two older men sat on either side of him. Matthew thought the fuss over him was unnecessary but it was pleasing to know they cared so much. As soon as the lights went down, they turned off their cell phones and waited for the show to start.
Partway through the feature, Antonio had to go to the bathroom so he scooted out to the aisle and nearly sprinted down to the exit. Gilbert rolled his eyes.
"I told him to go before we left," he said. "He never listens."
Matthew smiled and whispered back. "You guys seem to treat him like a child."
"He kind of is," Gilbert responded. "You know, when he's with Lovino, he calls himself 'Boss' and Lovi 'henchman' like when they were kids."
"Ah, right... He told me Lovino's family used to work for his," Matthew said.
"Yeah but it's quite the opposite now so it's just creepy," Gilbert said. "Speaks in the third person a lot."
"I think that's cute."
"Cute for a child, not a grown man. It'd be cute for you but not him."
Matthew frowned. "You think I'm a child?"
"What? No! That's not what I meant!" Gilbert said.
"Shh!" someone a few seats in front of them said.
He stuck his tongue out at them. "'Shh' yourself! Renner's not even talking!"
Matthew poked him. "What did you mean then?"
"Huh?" Gilbert scratched his head. "Well... I don't mean this in a bad way, but you're pretty cute. For a guy."
Matthew pouted. "So I'm not as manly as you?"
"Matt, you're misunderstanding me..." Gilbert was beginning to sweat. "Geez, you're very youthful for a guy... I mean with your big violet eyes, and soft blond hair..." He suddenly shut himself up just as Matthew was becoming intrigued.
"I... Is that all?" he asked.
Gilbert nodded slowly then realized they were in the dark. "For the cute stuff, yeah... Otherwise on the inside... Well you seem pretty smart and you're probably more mature than all three of us loser."
Matthew blushed. "Well... I don't think you give yourself enough credit either... You guys are probably the nicest people I have ever met. And Gilbert... You can be pretty cute too."
Gilbert snickered. "Yeah? How?"
"Well... Your hair's so fluffy, it reminds me of a stuffed animal," Matthew said patting his head. "And the little bird you have is really cute too... When he's on your head, it's the cutest thing I've ever seen."
It was Gilbert's time to blush. He cleared his throat. "Well... Um, you're still cuter."
Matthew huffed. "Whatever."
Gilbert chuckled and smiled at Matthew. He could see the film reflecting off the Canadian's glasses but his gaze drifted up to his eyes. They really were beautiful, the big violet orbs that stared back at him, decorated by his pale tipped eyelashes. He found himself leaning forward slightly, just to get a better look at them in the dark.
Then Antonio got back, and the violet darted away from him to greet the Spaniard back again. More people shushed them but Gilbert gave them dirty looks.
When the movie ended, they waited past the credits to see if there was anything interesting in the end but there wasn't and they left the theatre.
Out in the hall they were throwing away their popcorn and Gilbert and Antonio turned their phones on again.
"Sheiße! Francis called seven times!" Gilbert said. "This guy is seriously getting annoying!"
"He called me too," Antonio said. "Texted that we should call him as soon as possible 'cause it's an emergency."
"Then shouldn't you call him?" Matthew asked.
"Yeah, yeah, hold on..." Gilbert sighed and called. As soon as the line picked up, there was no greeting.
"Where are you?! I've been trying to call you for two hours!" Francis said.
"You can't leave us alone for a second, can you?" Gilbert said. "We went to see a movie so our phones were off! Seriously, what is your problem?"
"Look, Matthew needs to come to the hospital immediately. How soon can he get here?"
"Well, we took your car so in a few minutes," Gilbert said. "Is he alright, though? This sounds serious."
"It's none of your business right now. Just bring him!" Francis demanded.
"Okay, okay! We're coming! Bye!"
Francis hung up and Gilbert turned to Matthew.
"What's going on?" Matthew asked worriedly. "What's the emergency?"
"I don't know but apparently we're going to the hospital. Come on."
Matthew nodded and they all went down to the car. He was looking pretty upset the whole way so Gilbert tried to reassure him.
"I'm sure it's nothing..." Gilbert said but the boy's response was only another nod.
When they did get to the hospital, Matthew was told to go alone up to Elizabeta's office. Gilbert and Antonio were left to wait in the lobby.

Francis and Elizabeta were waiting for him when Matthew entered the office. Elizabeta sat at her desk while Francis sat adjacent to her.
"Please close the door and sit," Elizabeta said motioning to another chair. Matthew did as told although uncomfortably. Francis was watching him with hands folded.
"How are you feeling?" Elizabeta asked.
"Fine," Matthew answered.
"How was your movie?" Francis asked.
Matthew shrugged. "It could have been better... Can you please just tell me what's going on? Do I have a disease? Am I terminal?"
"No, no..." Francis said but he looked to Elizabeta to answer the first question.
"Matthew..." Elizabeta said slowly. "Well, we did a few tests on the samples you gave me and those include an HIV test, an AIDS test, deficiencies tests and also a pregnancy test..."
Matthew sat up straight and tilted his head. "...What are you saying? Why would you test for that?"
"Well it's very rare but it's mandatory for us to test for it in your condition," Elizabeta said. "Some men can carry children..."
"Well, I know that because I met Gilbert's niece but you’re not saying I..." Matthew swallowed hard. "...Wouldn't I have already known if I could...?"
"Since we only found out about these occurrences a few years ago, it's only recently that the tests for this...ability have begun to be introduced in regular tests," Francis said. "So if this had happened over a year ago, you probably wouldn't know until you started showing."
"So...I'm actually...pregnant?" Matthew put his forehead in his hands. "This can't be happening..."
"I know this is difficult for you..." Francis tried to place a hand on Matthew's shoulder but he pushed it away.
"You have no idea how difficult this is for me!" Matthew said, his eyes tearing up. "I don't even know who the father is! I don't have a home! I don't have a job! I'm only twenty-two!" He started to hiccough and wiped his eyes furiously. "I-I can't have a baby! Please tell me this is just a dream..."
Finally Francis was able to rub his back. Elizabeta looked down to her notes.
"Matthew..." she said. "We're here to help you. But we really need to start talking about your options. The best thing right now would be an ultrasound to get a good idea of how far along you are and proceed from there."
"I want an abortion." Matthew wiped his face. "There's no talk about my options... I want it gone. I can't take care of the baby."
Elizabeta looked to Francis and Francis pursed his lips. "Mathieu... Because you're a man... There aren't yet any reliable abortion methods for you."
Matthew stared at him in horror. "...You're joking. There has to be something...."
"Well, medical abortion might work..." Elizabeta said. "None of the other cases have aborted so we don't know what would work..."
"...How many cases have there been?"
Francis answered quickly. "Six including you..."
Matthew frowned. "Only five other men have had babies? And all of them wanted them?"
"Well, yes. Miracles, they decided," Francis said.
Matthew stood up, trembling like an earthquake. "This is no miracle... This is a curse." He gripped his own hand. "Can't you just...open me up and take it out? How different is my body from a woman's anyway? I'm assuming there's some kind of womb you could cut open..."
"It's not the same as a woman's. For all we know, doing that could prevent you conceiving again..."
Matthew gripped his hair. "Why would I want to conceive again?! I already don't want this one! Get it out!"
"Mathieu, calm down!" Francis and hugged him. "We'll work this out... You'll be okay..."
Matthew just gripped his coat and wept. "What did I do...to deserve this?"
"Shh, just calm down..." Francis rocked him from side to side, stroking his hair. "It'll be alright, je jure."
The slow motion did relax Matthew a little. He sniffed and buried his face in Francis' chest. "...What do I do?"
Francis patted his head. "For now, we'll get the ultrasound done, alright?"
Matthew nodded and Francis held him at arm’s length. "Bien. Let's try to get that done today. Go with Elizabeta."
Elizabeta held out her hand and Matthew took it, letting her lead him out of the room.

Oh dear... This isn't good... But y'all saw it comin', yeah? Yeah.

By the way, there are gonna be so many chapters because they're kinda short for my standards anyway. So far, I've written twenty and I don't think I'm even half way through.
